Bronchitis is a respiratory condition that occurs when the bronchial tubes, and air passages in the lungs, become inflamed and irritated. This can cause a persistent cough, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic, with acute bronchitis being more common and usually caused by a viral infection such as the flu or the common cold.

Symptoms of acute bronchitis typically include:

Treatment for acute bronchitis usually involves managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications such as cough suppressants and pain relievers.

In some cases, drugs such as bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids may be prescribed to help manage symptoms. Antibiotics are not typically prescribed unless there is a bacterial infection present.

Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, is a long-term condition that may require ongoing treatment and management. Quitting smoking and avoiding irritants such as air pollution and dust can help prevent the development of chronic bronchitis.
