A burn to the skin is an injury that can occur when the skin is exposed to heat, radiation, chemicals, electricity, or friction. Burns can range in severity from mild to severe and can be classified into three categories:

  1. First-degree burns are the mildest type of burns, affecting only the top layer of the skin (epidermis). They are usually characterized by redness, pain, and swelling but do not result in blistering or peeling.

  2. Second-degree burns: These burns affect the epidermis and the underlying layer of skin (dermis). They are usually characterized by blistering, swelling, and severe pain.

  3. Third-degree burns are the most severe type of burn, affecting all layers of the skin and potentially the underlying tissues, such as muscles and bones. Third-degree burns can cause the skin to appear charred or blackened and may not be painful due to nerve damage.

Burn treatment depends on the severity of the burn and the cause of the injury. Still, it can include cooling the burn with water, applying ointments or creams to soothe the skin, and in severe cases, hospitalization, and surgery.
