Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva. This thin, transparent layer lines the eyelid's inside and covers the eye's white part. The most common symptoms of pink eye include:

  • Redness in the white of the eye and/or inside the eyelids

  • Itching or burning sensation in the eye

  • Swollen conjunctiva

  • Discharge from the eye

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Blurred vision

Treatment for pink eye depends on the underlying cause. Viruses, bacteria, allergens, or irritants can cause pink eye. If a virus or allergen causes pink eye, it typically resolves within a week or two. However, if bacteria cause pink eye, antibiotics may be necessary to clear the infection.

To care for pink eye, you can:

  1. Apply a warm compress: Soak a clean cloth in warm water and place it over your closed eye for a few minutes, several times daily. This can help soothe your eyes and relieve any discomfort.

  2. Avoid touching your eyes: To prevent the spread of pink eye, avoid touching your eyes or sharing items such as towels or makeup with others.

  3. Wash your hands frequently: This can help prevent the spread of pink eye and other infections.

  4. Over-the-counter eye drops can help relieve symptoms such as redness and itching. However, be sure to read the label and follow the instructions carefully.

  5. Seek medical attention: If symptoms persist or are severe, or you have a weakened immune system, it is vital to seek medical attention.
