Tonsillitis

A woman came to the doctor's appointment and checked for tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an infection or inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped glands located at the back of the throat. The most common symptoms of tonsillitis include:

  • Sore throat

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Red and swollen tonsils

  • White or yellow spots on the tonsils

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

  • Fever and chills

  • Headache and earache

  • Bad breath

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the underlying cause. A virus often causes tonsillitis, but bacteria, such as streptococcus, can also cause it. If a virus causes tonsillitis, it will typically resolve within a week or two. However, if bacteria cause tonsillitis, antibiotics may be necessary to clear the infection.

To care for tonsillitis, you can:

  1. Rest: Get plenty of rest to help your body fight off the infection.

  2. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, tea, and soup, to help soothe your throat and prevent dehydration.

  3. Use over-the-counter pain relievers: Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce fever. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.

  4. Eat soft foods: Eat foods that are easy to swallow, such as soup, yogurt, and mashed potatoes.

  5. Avoid irritants: Avoid smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, and other irritants such as pollutants and chemicals.

  6. Seek medical attention: If your symptoms persist or are severe or you have a weakened immune system, it is essential to seek medical attention.

Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or recommend other treatments to help relieve your symptoms. In some cases, a tonsillectomy may be necessary to remove the tonsils.
