Suppose a bacterial or viral infection causes diarrhea. In that case, antibiotics or antiviral medications may be necessary to treat the underlying cause. Suppose an underlying medical condition, such as inflammatory bowel or celiac disease, cause diarrhea. In that case, treatment will focus on managing the underlying condition.

Practicing good hygiene to prevent diarrhea, such as washing hands regularly and properly preparing and storing food, is essential. Avoiding foods or drinks that may trigger diarrhea, such as spicy or fatty foods or alcohol, may also help prevent the condition.
