House Calls Deliver Comfort

For patients, it means the calming presence of a doctor coming to them.  Across the board, medical care is less stressful for patients on their own “turf.”  Having access to home-based health care means that:

●      House calls can be scheduled for the same day instead of waiting days or weeks for an available appointment.

●      Patients can remain comfortably at home when they are sick or injured.

●      Busy parents can schedule primary care visits and immunizations for their children at their own convenience.

●      Younger adults caring for debilitated parents never have to struggle with transporting them or resorting to the expense of calling an ambulance..

●      Dementia patients do not have to go to a strange, upsetting environment to receive care.

Catching Up with Star Trek

Is modern medicine finally catching up to what we first saw on Star Trek?  We may not have advanced to the point where we can get healthcare from something like the Emergency Medical Hologram on Star Trek Voyager, but honestly, would you want to?  We basically have in-home access to a wise and kindly “Doctor Baker” (McCoy could be so crusty, after all) wielding the kind of technology we once assumed to be the stuff of science fiction?  Not bad for a planet still awaiting first contact!
