Endometriosis

patient at the doctor's office for endometriosis

Endometriosis is when the tissue that usually lines the inside of the uterus grows outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other organs in the pelvis. This can cause inflammation, scarring, and adhesions, resulting in chronic pain, infertility, and other complications.

The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but it is thought to be related to hormonal imbalances and genetics. Symptoms of endometriosis can vary from person to person but may include:

  1. Painful periods

  2. Chronic pelvic pain

  3. Pain during intercourse

  4. Infertility

  5. Fatigue

  6. Digestive issues

Diagnosis of endometriosis often involves a physical exam, imaging tests, and laparoscopic surgery to examine the pelvic area and take a tissue sample for biopsy.

Treatment for endometriosis may include pain medications, hormone therapy to suppress the growth of endometrial tissue, or surgery to remove the tissue. In some cases, infertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be necessary.

Individuals with endometriosis need to work with a healthcare provider to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their specific symptoms and needs. Pain management techniques such as relaxation exercises, heat therapy, and acupuncture may also help manage endometriosis symptoms.
