Indigestion or Heartburn
Indigestion and heartburn are digestive conditions that can cause discomfort in the upper abdomen and chest. However, there are some differences between the two:
Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, refers to symptoms that can include:
bloating
belching
feeling fullness after eating
It can be caused by various factors, including overeating, eating too quickly, consuming fatty or spicy foods, and stress.
On the other hand, heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest that occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. It is typically felt behind the breastbone and may be accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth or a feeling of food being stuck in the throat.
While indigestion can cause discomfort and a feeling of fullness, heartburn is usually characterized by a burning sensation in the chest. However, both conditions can be treated with similar medications and lifestyle changes, such as avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down immediately after eating.
If you experience persistent or severe symptoms, you must talk to your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying health conditions.
