An infected injury is a wound or injury infected with bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms. When bacteria or other harmful organisms enter the body through a break in the skin, they can cause an infection.

This can lead to symptoms such as:

  • pain,

  • redness,

  • swelling,

  • warmth,

  • tenderness at the site of the injury.

Sometimes, an infected injury may also produce pus or other discharge. Infected injuries can range from minor cuts and scrapes to more serious wounds, such as a deep puncture or surgical incisions.

An infected injury can lead to more severe complications, such as cellulitis, sepsis, or osteomyelitis, if left untreated. Preventing and treating infections is essential to promote proper healing and prevent more severe complications.
