Sports physical
A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a medical examination performed by a licensed healthcare provider to assess an individual's overall health and fitness level before participating in sports or other physical activities.
The exam typically includes a review of medical history, physical examination, and sometimes laboratory tests, such as blood or urine tests. Physical sports aim to identify any medical conditions or physical limitations that may put the individual at risk for injury or health problems while participating in sports or other activities.
During the physical examination, the healthcare provider may check the individual's vital signs, vision, hearing, heart and lung function, musculoskeletal system, and neurological function. The provider may also discuss nutrition, hydration, injury prevention, and the importance of rest and recovery.
Sports physicals are usually required by schools, youth sports organizations, and other athletic programs before allowing an individual to participate in organized sports or physical activities. It is important to note that a sports physical is not a substitute for regular medical care. Individuals should continue to see their primary care provider for routine medical care.
