There are many different types of vaginal infections or irritations that women may experience, each with its symptoms and causes. Some common vaginal infections and irritations include:

  1. Yeast Infections: A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, usually in the vagina. Symptoms include itching, burning, irritation in the vaginal area, and a thick, white discharge.

  2. Bacterial Vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance in the bacteria that usually live in the vagina. Symptoms include a fishy odor, thin, gray, or white discharge, and itching or burning in the vaginal area.

  3. Trichomoniasis: Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Symptoms include itching, burning, irritation in the vaginal area, and a green or yellow frothy discharge.

  4. Vulvovaginal Candidiasis: Vulvovaginal candidiasis is a yeast infection affecting the external genital area and the vagina. Symptoms include itching, burning, and irritation in the vulva and vagina, as well as a thick, white discharge.

  5. Genital Herpes: Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. Symptoms include painful blisters or sores in the genital area, itching, burning, and discomfort during urination.

  6. Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a type of skin irritation that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritating substance, such as soap, detergent, or spermicide. Symptoms include itching, burning, and redness in the genital area.

Treatment for vaginal infections and irritations depends on the underlying cause. Yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis can be treated with antifungal or antibacterial medication. At the same time, trichomoniasis and genital herpes may require antiviral medication. Contact dermatitis may be treated with topical corticosteroids or by avoiding the irritant.

See a doctor if you experience symptoms of a vaginal infection or irritation, as some conditions can lead to severe complications if left untreated.
