FDA Approved Prescription Weight Loss Medications

  • Liraglutide (Saxenda)

This drug is prescribed for weight control in adults and children over 12 years of age with signs of obesity. Saxenda works by mimicking an intestinal hormone that tells the brain that the stomach is full. The drug is approved for long-term use. Used as an injection.

  • Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)

Mounjaro is formulated to improve blood sugar control and is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. However, the drug has also shown faster weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes than standard therapy. The drug is not approved by the FDA as a weight loss drug, but may be used as directed by a doctor to treat obesity. Mounjaro is given by injection under the skin once a week.

  • Orlistat (Xenical) in capsules

This drug helps block incoming dietary fat and is used as an addition to a low-calorie diet, which involves consuming less than 30% of daily calories from fat. Xenical is approved for long term use and may be used in children over 12 years of age. Multivitamins must be taken in conjunction with Xenical, as the drug temporarily makes it difficult for the body to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K.

  • Phentermine and Topiramate (Qsymia) in capsules

This drug helps reduce appetite. Topiramate mimics satiety, and decreases appetite. The FDA has approved Qsymia for chronic weight management in obese children 12 years of age and older with a BMI in the 95th percentile or greater. Qsymia should be used as adjunctive therapy to a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

  • Semaglutide (Wegovy)

Semaglutide works by mimicking a hormone that stimulates insulin production, reduces appetite, and induces satiety. The drug was first approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Later, the FDA approved Semaglutide for the treatment of obesity. Physicians may also prescribe this drug for children aged 12 and older with a BMI at/or above the 95th percentile. Semaglutide is approved for long-term use.
