What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects the respiratory tract. Someone with asthma may experience an inflamed and narrowed respiratory tract, which leads to wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. When these symptoms worsen, it's called an asthma attack.

There are 4 types of asthma: allergic, non-allergic, asthma from chemicals, asthma during exercise.

There are several ways to diagnose asthma: physical exam, medical history, spirometry, fractional exhalation tests for nitric oxide, and also skin allergy or blood tests.

A doctor may prescribe special treatment that may include trigger avoidance strategies, short-term medicines to provide care, and drugs to prevent symptoms.
