Coughing
Coughing is a natural reflex that helps clear the airways of mucus, irritants, and foreign particles. While coughing can be beneficial, persistent coughing can indicate an underlying condition or illness.
Some common causes of coughing include:
Respiratory infections, such as the common cold, flu, or pneumonia
Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke
Lung cancer
The treatment for a cough depends on the underlying cause. For example, if a viral infection causes a cough, rest and over-the-counter medications such as cough suppressants or expectorants may help relieve symptoms. If the cough is caused by asthma or allergies, medicines such as inhalers or antihistamines may be prescribed.
In some cases, persistent or severe coughing may require medical attention. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider if coughing is accompanied by other symptoms, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or coughing up blood.
