Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is an infection or inflammation of the tonsils, two oval-shaped glands located at the back of the throat. The most common symptoms of tonsillitis include:
Difficulty swallowing
Red and swollen tonsils
White or yellow spots on the tonsils
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Fever and chills
Bad breath
Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the underlying cause. A virus often causes tonsillitis, but bacteria, such as streptococcus, can also cause it. If a virus causes tonsillitis, it will typically resolve within a week or two. However, if bacteria cause tonsillitis, antibiotics may be necessary to clear the infection.
To care for tonsillitis, you can:
Rest: Get plenty of rest to help your body fight off the infection.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, tea, and soup, to help soothe your throat and prevent dehydration.
Use over-the-counter pain relievers: Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help relieve pain and reduce fever. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label.
Eat soft foods: Eat foods that are easy to swallow, such as soup, yogurt, and mashed potatoes.
Avoid irritants: Avoid smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke, and other irritants such as pollutants and chemicals.
Seek medical attention: If your symptoms persist or are severe or you have a weakened immune system, it is essential to seek medical attention.
Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics or recommend other treatments to help relieve your symptoms. In some cases, a tonsillectomy may be necessary to remove the tonsils.
