What Is Shingles?
Shingles is an infection of the nerves and skin around the nerve, caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that is responsible for chicken pox. In fact, in people who have already had chickenpox, the virus remains in its inactive form in the body for years and can come back in the form of shingles.
Shingles can occur anywhere in the body, but mostly on one side. A person may feel pain and burning itching skin in the affected area, experience general malaise and sometimes fever. The rash appears as blisters.
It is very important to recognize and treat shingles at an early stage to avoid complications.
